Colorado Pilots Association “Flight Lines” – June 2001 (Volume 18, No. 4)
This issue features a detailed account of the CPA’s Mountain Flying Course held in May 2001, led by instructors Jerry Eberhard and Doug Tabor. A member participant describes the practical flying portion, which included four legs: Jeffco to Kremmling, Kremmling to Glenwood Springs, Glenwood Springs to Aspen and Leadville, and Leadville back to Jeffco. The experience provided invaluable training in high-altitude mountain navigation, ridge flying, and emergency procedures, emphasizing the critical importance of proper preparation, weight and balance calculations, accurate weather briefings, and experienced instruction when flying Colorado’s unique terrain.
The newsletter also covers AOPA town hall meetings held in Colorado Springs and Denver, where aviation leaders discussed emerging navigation technology, runway safety programs, and the upcoming Capstone/Safe Flight 21 software. Additionally, the publication highlights concerns about potential closure of Navajo Landing Strip at Navajo Reservoir State Park, with state park management planning construction that could permanently eliminate this valuable fly-in location.
