3U2 - Johnson Creek, ID.
Idaho Back Country Fly-in to Johnson Creek
(with pre and post trip options)
Pre-trip event: Stanley (2U7) July 12 – 14 – camping or hotels (optional)
Johnson Creek (3U2) July 14 – 16 – upscale camping
Post-trip event: Cavanaugh Bay (66S) July 16 – 19 – camping or hotels (optional)
Hosts: Colleen Leppert and Carl Rand
Idaho has nearly 100 backcountry airstrips that offer access to spectacular scenery and outdoor recreation. We’ll be traveling to one of them with optional stops both before and after for those interested.
Johnson Creek (3U2) July 14 – 16
Idaho’s premier airplane camping site. This is fancy camping - toilets, hot showers, charging facilities, potable water, a microwave, fire pits, picnic table, frozen water bottles you can use as cooler ice, shade structure and coffee provided by camp host.
Friday, July 14
Recommend arriving before noon on Friday to avoid potential afternoon weather. Look for a building about halfway down the strip and try parking around there on either side of the airstrip – we can’t really control getting all of planes near each other but there is the basic location we will try for. Friday afternoon is on your own – you can explore the area around the airport which is beautiful. Optional hike to the very small hot springs departing at 1:30pm. Happy Hour 5:30pm at the Veranda -bring something to share. Dinner on your own.
Saturday, July 15
Optional flight to breakfast at Smiley. Saturday afternoon on your own. Group dinner in little historic mining town of Yellow Pine.

Stanley (2U7): July 12 – 14
(OPTIONAL Pre-trip event)
Due to potential weather, you may wish to stay overnight someplace near Johnson Creek so that you can fly in early on Friday. We are staying at Stanley, which is a less challenging back country airstrip with access to camping sites and hotels. We plan to stay at the Mountain Village Resort and eat all meals out while in Stanley. The Mountain Village Resort is walking distance from the airport, has courtesy shuttles available and has access to their indoor hot springs. Rooms are almost sold out but there are other options for lodging as well. Thursday Night is the Town Street Dance with live music and dancing in the streets. Stanley looks beautiful with options for hiking, biking and rafting. Stanley is also part of the Central Idaho Dark Sky reserve and should be great for star gazing.
Leave Friday Morning to Fly to Johnson Creek.

Cavanaugh Bay (66S) July 16 – 19
(OPTIONAL Post-trip event)
Another premier Idaho grass strip with camping and hot showers on the shore of Priest Lake. Lodging options are available as well. There is also a Seaplane base on the lake. It frequently has early morning fog and low level strata. We are planning on camping and dining in town.
