Volume 26, No. 2 – February 2009

The February 2009 issue of Flight Lines focuses on organizational transparency, leadership changes, and important regulatory updates for Colorado pilots. CPA President Bob Kinney announces a commitment to greater member communication through posting monthly board meeting minutes and quarterly financial reports on the association’s website. A significant leadership transition occurs with Larry Camden taking over as chairman of the Mountain Flying–High Elevation Airport Operations program, a 22-year-old training initiative recognized as one of the nation’s premier mountain flying courses. Camden, an experienced pilot with over 38,000 flight hours and recent Instructor of the Year recognition for Colorado and Wyoming, brings extensive credentials and enthusiasm to advance the program’s instructional materials and video resources.

The newsletter also addresses critical regulatory developments affecting pilots planning international travel. Walt Bell provides essential guidance on the new Electronic Advance Passenger Information System (eAPIS), which becomes mandatory in May 2009 for all private aircraft departing or entering the United States. The FAA also highlights the transition away from 121.5 MHz Emergency Locator Transmitters, as international satellite processing ends on February 1, 2009, making 406 MHz ELTs increasingly important for search and rescue operations.
