What the Locator Codes Mean

Tap to see what DPE-PE-ASEL, CIRE, FIE and the other codes stand for

The locator lists each examiner's authorizations as codes in three parts. DPE-PE-ASEL reads as: Designated Pilot Examiner, Private Pilot Examiner, airplane single-engine land.

  • Instrument rating: look for CIRE, which covers commercial and instrument checkrides.
  • Flight instructor or instrument instructor: look for FIE. Not every FIE gives initial CFI checkrides, so ask when you call.

Tips for Scheduling Your Checkride

  • Start looking for a DPE well before you're ready. Popular examiners book 4-6 weeks out
  • Have your IACRA application started before contacting a DPE
  • Ask your CFI for DPE recommendations, since they know who works well with students
  • Confirm the DPE's fee and what it includes (oral + flight, retest policy)
  • Check if the DPE requires a specific aircraft type or avionics suite
  • Consider density altitude: summer checkrides at high-altitude airports need careful performance planning
