CPA's Position on Landing Fees
The Colorado Pilots Association opposes landing fees as a short-sighted approach that introduces unnecessary costs, compromises safety, and undermines the long-term health of general aviation.
- Safety: Fees concentrate traffic at nearby free airports, increasing midair collision risk. Pilots may disable ADS-B to avoid tracking, undermining a federal safety mandate.
- Fairness: Using ADS-B data for billing violates the original federal safety purpose of the mandate. Fees disproportionately burden small aircraft owners and flight schools.
- Economics: Landing fees discourage visitor traffic and reduce fuel sales, maintenance revenue, and hangar occupancy — hurting the very airports that impose them.
- Training: Higher costs discourage student pilots and flight training. Over 50% of airline pilots are trained at GA airports — fees threaten the pipeline.
- Noise: Landing fees don't reduce noise — they merely shift traffic to nearby airports, displacing the problem rather than addressing it.
