The April 2011 issue of Flight Lines focuses on the economic challenges facing small Colorado airports and introduces a new initiative from the Colorado Pilots Association. CPA President Walt Barbo highlights the devastating impact of the depressed economy on general aviation and small airport operations, using Glenwood Springs Airport as a case study. Airport Manager Dick Weinburg describes critical financial shortfalls, reduced fuel sales, and deferred maintenance, while noting that unlike many airports, Glenwood Springs receives no municipal funding support. CPA member Nate Duehr raises an important question about whether pilots using airports for training and brief stops should contribute financially to their sustainability.

In response to growing interest in light sport aircraft, the CPA announces its inaugural Rocky Mountain Light Sport Aircraft Expo, scheduled for May 14th at Front Range Airport (FTG). The event promises to showcase the fastest-growing segment of aviation with aircraft from over a dozen manufacturers, flight schools, and service providers, along with educational sessions on Sport Pilot certification and LSA operations. The expo emphasizes the affordability and accessibility of light sport flying compared to traditional general aviation.
