The May 2022 issue of Flight Lines highlights weather challenges affecting Colorado pilots and features a detailed wrap-up of the CPA’s April trip to Spaceport America and Trinity Site in New Mexico. CPA President Marty Brophy shares a cautionary tale about “get-up-there-itis,” describing a harrowing landing experience at Fort Collins during unexpectedly strong winds, emphasizing the importance of saying “no” to unsafe flying conditions. Despite forecasts predicting poor weather, 25 CPA members successfully completed the two-venue event with all 11 aircraft arriving on schedule and all planned activities proceeding without incident.
The Trinity/Spaceport event proved to be a well-organized success despite previous cancellations due to COVID and weather. Participants toured Spaceport America’s 12,000-foot runway facility, learned about Virgin Galactic’s spaceship operations, and experienced the G Shock training device that simulates 360-degree movements. The group also visited Truth or Consequences, toured visitor centers, and received briefings on various space projects, with some facilities remaining off-limits due to proprietary work.
