Density Altitude Calculator
Critical for performance planning at Colorado's high-altitude airports
Common Airports
Every public field in Colorado β 287 of them β plus the out-of-state destinations CPA flies to: Cheyenne, Mesa, Moab, Santa Fe, Sedona.
Why density altitude matters in Colorado: Most Colorado airports sit above 5,000' MSL. On a hot summer day, density altitude can exceed field elevation by 3,000-4,000'. At Leadville (9,934'), a 90Β°F day pushes DA above 13,000' β your normally aspirated engine produces less than 50% of rated power, takeoff roll doubles, and climb rate drops dramatically.
Rule of thumb: Add ~60 ft of DA for every 1Β°F above standard temperature at your altitude. Standard temp at sea level is 59Β°F (15Β°C), decreasing ~3.5Β°F per 1,000' of elevation.
Formula: Pressure Altitude = (29.92 - altimeter) Γ 1,000 + field elevation. Density Altitude = Pressure Altitude + (120 Γ (OATΒ°C - ISA tempΒ°C)).
