Background

About Pueblo Memorial

Pueblo Memorial Airport is a towered, city-owned airport 5 miles east of Pueblo. It opened as a military airfield during World War II (the FAA lists February 1944) and has three runways, the longest 10,498 feet. Its top activities are flight training, including the Air Force's Initial Flight Training program, military flying, airline service to Denver, corporate flying and air cargo. The 2025 Colorado Aviation Economic Impact Study counts more than 100 based aircraft and more than 170,000 operations a year, supporting 838 jobs and $226.1 million in business revenue. The main issue for general aviation pilots today is the city's hangar lease dispute with Airport Properties Inc.

Hangar lease dispute

The City of Pueblo sent Airport Properties Inc. (API), which has subleased hangar space under a 2002 ground lease, a notice of default in November 2024 and a notice of termination on January 2, 2026. Lawsuits followed, and the city is offering hangar tenants new leases directly; in October 2026 the city attorney told council that four of 14 tenants had not agreed. City Council approved $300,000 for the city's legal fees on September 28, 2026, then reversed that 5-1 on October 13. The Pueblo Memorial Airport User Group disputes that the new leases are fair.

Airline service to Denver

Denver Air Connection began jet service to Denver International on May 1, 2025, under the federal Essential Air Service program, after Southern Airways Express withdrew in 2024. A proposed cut to the federal program could put the service at risk. A 6 a.m. departure to Denver starts November 1, 2026.

Military training traffic

CAE runs the Air Force's Initial Flight Training program here, training 1,300 to 1,700 candidates a year. The FAA Chart Supplement notes extensive weekday student training around the airport, so expect a busy pattern.

Runway 8R/26L rebuilt (2024)

The main runway got a $9.8 million mill and overlay with new lighting and signs, 95 percent paid by the FAA. It reopened in June 2024 after a 21-day closure.
