The Community Value of Aviation
General aviation is more than flying β it powers communities, saves lives, protects wildlife, trains the next generation, and connects Colorado.
General Aviation's Essential Roles in Colorado
General aviation isn't just recreational flying. Across Colorado, GA aircraft and the airports that support them serve critical functions that most people never see β from fighting wildfires in the mountains to connecting rural communities to medical care.
Aerial Firefighting
Colorado's wildfire season depends on air tankers, lead planes, and spotter aircraft staged at GA airports. Without these airports, response times for mountain fires would double or triple.
Agricultural Aviation
Crop dusting and aerial application across eastern Colorado's farmland. Ag pilots operate from small rural strips that serve no other commercial purpose but are critical to the local economy.
Rural Connectivity
For towns like Leadville, Meeker, and Walden, the local GA airport is their only air connection. Business travelers, medical patients, and emergency responders depend on these airstrips.
Mountain Search & Rescue
CAP and volunteer pilots conduct search missions in mountain terrain that ground teams and helicopters can't always reach. Fixed-wing aircraft provide critical aerial coverage for lost hikers, downed aircraft, and avalanche response.
Aerial Survey & Infrastructure
Pipeline patrol, power line inspection, wildlife surveys, and mapping. GA aircraft monitor thousands of miles of Colorado infrastructure that would be impossible to inspect from the ground.
Business Aviation
GA airports connect rural Colorado communities to commerce. Businesses in resort towns, agricultural hubs, and energy communities depend on GA for client access, employee travel, and freight.
Flight Training & STEM
Colorado's flight schools train the next generation of airline, military, and commercial pilots. Each student generates local economic activity β fuel, maintenance, housing, and airport revenue for years.
Medical Access & Air Ambulance
GA airports serve as staging points for air ambulance operations, organ transport, and patient transfer flights. In mountain communities, air medical transport is often the only option for critical care.
Tourism & Recreation
Scenic flights, glider operations, skydiving, and backcountry strip access. Aviation tourism brings visitors and revenue to communities across Colorado β from Telluride to Steamboat Springs.

The 2025 Colorado Economic Impact Study (CEIS) documents the significant economic contribution of aviation to Colorado. Watch the educational webinar for the full results.
Pilots Helping Communities
Colorado pilots donate thousands of hours each year flying medical patients, rescuing animals, supporting conservation, and responding to disasters. These organizations represent the heart of general aviation.
Angel Flight West
Free flights for patients needing medical treatment far from home. 40 years of service, 100,000+ missions completed.
Pilots N Paws
501(c)(3) nonprofit connecting animal rescuers with volunteer pilots to transport shelter animals to safety and forever homes.
LightHawk
Network of 300 volunteer pilots who donate expertise, time, aircraft, and fuel for conservation missions at no cost to partners.
Civil Air Patrol
The official auxiliary of the U.S. Air Force. CAP volunteers conduct search and rescue, disaster relief, and aerospace education.
EAA Young Eagles
Free introductory flights for young people ages 8-17 to experience the thrill of flying and inspire the next generation of pilots.
Veterans Airlift Command
Free air transportation for post-9/11 combat wounded veterans and their families for medical and other compassionate purposes.
Angel Flight: Albert from Durango, CO
Albert flies from Durango (DRO) to Centennial (APA) for medical care at UCHealth. With 54 life-changing Angel Flight missions, volunteer pilots have given him access to treatment that would otherwise be unreachable.
Aviation in Emergency Response
When disaster strikes, GA pilots are often the first responders in the air β delivering supplies, conducting search and rescue, and evacuating communities before roads are cleared. In Colorado, this includes wildfire response where GA airports serve as air tanker bases, and mountain flood events where roads are impassable but airstrips remain accessible.

General aviation pilots organized search-and-rescue operations, recovery flights, and critical supply delivery in the aftermath of devastating Texas floods.

The Impact — and Importance — of General Aviation
General aviation supports more than 1.1 million jobs and generates $246 billion in annual economic output. From agricultural operations and aerial firefighting to business transportation and flight training, GA is the backbone of America's aviation system.

CAE Pilot Demand Outlook
The civil aviation industry will require more than 260,000 new pilots over the next decade, driven by mandatory retirements and industry growth. Flight training infrastructure at GA airports is critical to meeting this demand.
